CHUL WAN PARK
Theatre Director · Photographer · Game Multimedia Pioneer · Publisher · Educator
Chul Wan Park is a visionary multidisciplinary artist and cultural leader whose career spans over four decades. Moving fluidly across the stage, the camera lens, interactive digital media, and written text, he has dedicated his life to capturing the profound narratives of humanity and society. His unique artistic universe seamlessly fuses the spatial visuality of photography with the dynamic, ephemeral energy of theatrical performance.
Park’s profound artistic foundation was shaped during his time in the United Kingdom. He earned an MA in Theatre Studies (Directing & Playwriting) from the University of Leeds and completed his MPhil leading to PhD coursework (All But Dissertation) in Contemporary Theatre at Royal Holloway, University of London (RHBNC). This rigorous international background immersed him in the avant-garde methodologies of contemporary European theater. Upon returning to South Korea, he served as the Resident Director for the Experimental Theatre (Silhum) in the early 1990s—the heart of Seoul's theater district—where he garnered critical acclaim for directing modern masterpieces by Harold Pinter and Arthur Miller. In 1995, he founded Theatre People (Yeonin), serving as its Artistic Director to pioneer highly visual image-theatre and daring reinterpretations of Eastern and Western classics. His directorial prowess on a grand scale was solidified when he wrote and directed the featured musical Korea Night for the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Paralympics.
Beyond the traditional proscenium arch, Park was also a true 1st-generation pioneer of the Korean multimedia and gaming industry during the golden era of the 1990s. Working with Dongseo Game Channel, the country's leading game publisher at the time, he worked as a screenwriter for Gwanggaeto the Great (1995), South Korea's very first historical Real-Time Strategy (RTS) PC game, and the legendary SBS live interactive TV show Run, Koba (1994). Leveraging his theatrical audio-directing expertise, he also orchestrated the comprehensive localization, script adaptation, and voice-dubbing direction for international blockbuster CD-ROM titles, including EA’s Wing Commander III: Heart of the Tiger and SCI’s Dark Side of the Moon, significantly elevating the standards of early digital narrative design.
Photography remains another cornerstone of his creative expression. Having won prestigious awards since the late 1970s—including Special Distinction at the Shin Nak-kyun Photography Competition and the Award of Excellence at the Korea-Japan Photographers Friendship Contest—Park continues to actively exhibit his fine art, landscape, and documentary works. His recent solo exhibitions include A Study of Memory 1 (2019) and Mujin-Giheng (Travel to Mujin) (2024). In 2020, his global standing as a visual artist was reaffirmed when he reached the final 4th-round shortlist for the internationally acclaimed Hamdan International Photography Award (HIPA).
As an esteemed educator, Park has nurtured generations of performing artists, having served as an Adjunct Professor at Sangmyung University, Full-Time Lecturer and Department Chair at Dongseo University, and Invited Professor at Sungkyul University. In 2019, he expanded his archiving mission by founding UBO Books, an art publishing house dedicated to preserving theatrical and photographic history. Today, he operates from SPACEDA, his creative atelier in Seoul, where he continues to dissolve boundaries between artistic disciplines and archive the stories of our time.
